Did Your Toilet Overflow?

We’ve all probably had to deal with a toilet overflow.  Most times it’s due to a simple clog that’s easy to fix. Other times it can be much more severe. If sewer damage is involved, the impact can be devastating.

Sewage Damage

When there is sewer damage, whether it’s a broken pipe or a clog, the wastewater can back up into your residence if it can’t drain. You will usually end up with a flooded toilet when your sewer has been compromised.

Tips for Drying Books Damaged by Water

Following these tips won’t guarantee recovery of all items, but should help you minimize the damage.

  • Set books on their tops or bottoms and open them up like a fan. Avoid standing opened books on the side edges.
  • Set the book on the driest side first, then as it dries, rotate it every couple of hours or so.
  • Place wax paper in between the covers of the book and the pages. The wax paper should be slightly larger than the size of the cover. Replace often to ensure faster drying.
  • Once the pages are no longer damp, close the book, place it on a hard surface and place a weight on top to keep the pages as flat as possible.

Did You Attempt a DIY Water Damage Restoration Project?

We applaud your efforts, but you may not have the proper training and or tools to successfully perform this work.

There are consequences for not performing mitigation services properly and mold damage should always be at the back of your mind. When the mitigation process is not carried out correctly, drying will not happen and pockets of moisture will be left in various corners of the house. This will lead to the eventual development of mold.

Water Damage as a Result of a Dishwasher Leak?

Are you one of the unfortunate homeowners dealing with dishwasher water damage?

Most of us have found out the hard way that regular soap used in a dishwasher causes an explosion of bubbles. Dishwasher leaks can be as obvious as soap bubbles making their way across the kitchen floor or start as a slow drip that may not be immediately noticed

Stopping leaks before they cause damage is ideal, but depending on the situation, is not always possible.

Common causes of dishwasher leaks:

  • Worn gaskets
  • Dishwasher not level
  • Wrong dishwashing soap used
  • Broken door
  • Defective dishwasher tub

Cloudy White Rings on Wood Furniture

Heat & Water Stained Wood

Stains and marks made by liquid or steam are usually white or light-colored. That means that they haven’t penetrated much more deeply than through the waxed or polished surface. When the stain is dark, however, it indicates that the liquid has penetrated through the finish on the wood and possibly through to the wood itself. If this is the case, you have more of a fix on your hands.

Those white, cloudy rings on your wood furniture don't have to stay there forever.

Quickly Turn Off Water to the Sink

Learn how to turn off the water to the bathroom sink quickly before a problem occurs that could result in a water damage.

  • Look under the sink for the two turnoff valves — one each for the hot and cold water faucets.
  • Grasp the valves with your hands — no tools are needed - and turn them clockwise until they are tightly closed.
  • Twist the water faucets to the full on-position and run the water until it stops.

Cleaning Gutters Is Essential To Property Maintenance

Water will flood, rot, mildew, and destroy your home if you allow it. Your home has defenses against water damage. Your roof is its first, but not only, line of defense. Your gutter system provides a vital secondary line of defense to warding off water damage. Gutters keep your home’s perimeter from becoming waterlogged and potentially leaking into the basement or causing other damage to the structure, as well as surrounding landscaping.

If your home has water damage from flooding or leaks caused by clogged or damaged gutters, call SERVPRO of Upper Darby, PA at (610) 352-0700
