Drexel Hill PA Homes: How to Minimize the Chance of Water Damage

3/15/2022 (Permalink)

Sudsy water is overflowing over the sink and onto the kitchen floor. SERVPRO of Upper Darby are no strangers to water damage, we've seen all kinds! Call us at 610-352-0700 to mitigate your water loss today.

Reality of Water Damage Statistics

It's easy to think that storm damage or water damage won't happen to you but statistics say otherwise: a whopping 14,000 people in the US experience a water damage emergency at home or work each day, and 98% of basements in the US will suffer from some type of water damage during their lifetime. Water damage is also among the most common causes of property insurance claims.

Any type of water damage if not taken care of properly will leave you with damage to your flooring, valuable belongings, and structural components. Also be aware if you have a lower level or a basement as they are especially prone to this type of damage. While you cannot stop a storm from happening, you can take these following steps to prevent water damage.

Appliances

It’s difficult to tell if your appliances are leaking, but there are things you can do to reduce the risk. First off, inspect the waterlines for all of your appliances at least once a year. If you do notice that any hoses are cracked, crimped, or brittle, replace them before they fail. Pay extra attention to hoses for refrigerators, ice makers, and washing machines; because washing machines have inlet hoses and drains, they are specifically susceptible to leaks. Also turn off the water supply for all appliances before traveling out of town so there’s no soggy surprises when you return home.

Kitchens and Bathrooms

Kitchens and bathrooms are prone to water damage simply due to the amount of plumbing in these rooms. Be sure to fix any leaking or dripping pipes as soon as possible, and be alert to any elevated humidity levels since that could indicate an underlying plumbing issue. Maintain caulk around showers and bathtubs since water that passes through gaps can penetrate walls and subfloors. If this sealant has cracked or separated, have it repaired quickly. The good news is that you can probably complete that task yourself, but it doesn’t hurt to involve a professional.

Protecting Pipes

Colder weather can cause pipes to freeze and burst. Protect your plumbing from this by insulating pipes that travel along exterior walls or through unheated crawlspaces. On cold nights, open cupboard doors to allow heat that would otherwise be closed off to that area for pipes behind the wall and let your faucets maintain a slow drip to keep the water flowing (double check that the drain isn’t blocked before doing so). Never set the thermostat below 55 degrees in your home either. Turn off valves for exterior faucets and drain all watering hoses before winter. If a pipe does freeze, don't thaw it too quickly otherwise the pipe may burst in the process.

If a Water Emergency Does Occur

  • Turn off the water supply immediately, call your utility company if necessary.
  • Use wood blocks or tinfoil to elevate or separate furniture from wet surfaces.
  • Stay out of areas where ceilings are sagging.
  • Use mops and towels to remove as much water as possible.
  • Remove books, magazines, and items that may bleed or stain.
  • Remove area rugs, table lamps, and colored items to prevent staining and to help dry the underlying surface.
  • Never use ceiling lights, TVs, or appliances in waterlogged areas.
  • Turn on fans, dehumidifiers, or air conditioners to remove excess moisture.
  • Place wet sofa cushions and upholstered items on end for faster drying.

By taking such preventive measures, you can minimize the likelihood of water damage affecting your home. If you do experience water damage at your home or business, respond quickly, and call the professionals at SERVPRO of Upper Darby at (302) 352-0700.

Ground view of a kitchen that currently has standing water. Standing water needs immediate action; that's where SERVPRO of Upper Darby comes in. We'll leave your house looking "Like it never even happened".

Flooding, plumbing leaks, andwater damage can happen at any time. Internal and external forces can harm valuable items, carpets, furnishings and structural components. Even in a well-maintained building, pipes can break, toilets can overflow, and water can seep behind walls and under floors. Waterlines for refrigerators often create concealed leaks that go unnoticed until mold and mildew have accumulated behind the appliance. The same is true for washing machine hoses that have cracked or become clogged. Water damage can also occur after a violent storm, a flood, or several days of steady rain. Basements and lower levels are especially prone to this type of damage.
Water Damage Statistics

Any type of leak can cause property damage and create safety and health concerns. It's easy to think that water damage or storm damage won't happen to you, but statistics say otherwise. Water damage is among the most common causes of property insurance claims. One in every 55 homes will have a water-related property damage claim this year.

Prevent Water Damage

By taking preventive measures, you can minimize the likelihood of water damage affecting your home. While you cannot stop a storm, you can follow these steps to help prevent water damage in your home.

Kitchens and Bathrooms
Kitchens and bathrooms are susceptible to water damage due to the amount of plumbing in these areas. Fix leaking or dripping pipes promptly, and be aware of elevated humidity levels that could indicate an underlying plumbing problem. Maintain caulk around showers and bathtubs. Turn off the water supply for all appliances before traveling out of town. Pay special attention to hoses for washing machines, refrigerators, and ice makers. Since washing machines have inlet hoses and drains, they are especially prone to leaks.

Protecting Pipes
Protect plumbing from freezing by insulating pipes that travel along exterior walls or through unheated crawlspaces. On cold nights, open cupboard doors, and let faucets drip. Before winter, drain all watering hoses, and turn off valves for exterior faucets. If a pipe does freeze, don't thaw it too quickly. That's how pipes burst. To protect your plumbing, never set the thermostat below 55 degrees.

The quicker we respond to the situation, the less likely that permanent damage will occur. SERVPRO of Upper Darby has a crew of highly trained technicians who can be onsite within four hours. Every water damage event is a little different and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same.

Water Removal & Drying / Dehumidification

We then begin extracting water. SERVPRO of Upper Darby uses powerful submersible gas pumps to extract pooling water. In less extreme cases, we can use industrial wet/dry vacuums to bring moisture out of carpeted floors. How long the initial drying process takes depends on the size of the affected area and the extent of damage, which is measured using moisture meters.

Cleaning, Sanitizing, & Restoration

After the initial phase is completed, we can begin the restoration process. Carpets can be removed to clean and dry both sides, reducing the possibility of mold growth after the event. Items can be treated with sanitizer, dried, deodorized, and returned to their original place. SERVPRO of Upper Darby always looks to mitigate loss, but in some cases, some items may be beyond repair.

How Water Damage Affects Your Drexel Hill, PA Floors

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

A white, modern designed bathroom that has an inch of standing water. SERVPRO of Upper Darby specializes in water damages of any type or size, from storm to flood to bathtub overflow.

Some Flooring Fares Well During Floods While Some Does Not

Flood damage is rarely a light load on a home; in most cases, flooding causes a severe, negative impact. The most damaged element is often your floors. Floors are completely submerged during floods, causing water to seep in and wreak havoc. But how exactly does water damage affect different types of flooring?
Wood Flooring
Water damage is often most pronounced on wood flooring. Wood is vulnerable to flooding and other water damage as its materials have been intentionally dried; when wet, it can rapidly change shape, warp, stain, and lose color.
Carpets
Carpeting is often typically hard-hit by a flood. Carpets have space in between their fibers and underneath them and are usually composed of cotton, fabric, or plastic fiber, all of which are highly susceptible to permanent water damage. These spaces can be widened, tearing the material apart. Carpets are also prone to staining and discoloration. Where a rug of a different color is on top of a carpet, its color may bleed through and cause thick discoloration. Carpets are often ripped up and replaced after a flood to prevent serious mold growth in the home.
Tile and Concrete
Tile, concrete, and other stone floors often fare the best in a flood. Tiles are typically immune to water, requiring only cleaning and sanitization following a flood. Be mindful, however, that some types of tile grout may be susceptible to water damage and can easily grow mold. A fresh grout layer may be required after a flood. Concrete, meanwhile, may stain and become discolored, although this is typically cleanable or easily painted over.

A Leaking Pipe in Delaware County Is a Constant Source of Moisture

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

A corroded pipe is dripping into a very full metal buck SERVPRO of Upper Darby specializes in many services including water damage restoration, mold remediation, and reconstruction.

A leaking pipe or other plumbing problems can create a constant source of moisture in your home. If you find a leaking pipe, get it repaired immediately. Mold may complicate the problem if the moisture problem is not addressed immediately.

Preventing Structural Damage

Never put off dealing with water damage. It can easily lead to structural damage that will only get worse if ignored. Rusting can weaken the foundational metal structure, and signs of damage include cracks in wood structures or the foundation itself, rust seeping out of cracks, and difficulty opening windows and doors. This damage may become irreversible. It’s better to call SERVPRO of Upper Darby for a water damage estimate today than an expensive structural engineer down the road.

Mold Hazards

Mold can cause health effects and can also cause significant damage to your property. You should look for mold on a regular basis in areas that are typically damp, such as laundry rooms and basements. If you detect a water moisture problem, a mold inspection should be considered. Mold only needs 24 hours to settle in and cause problems.

Why Your Home Should Not Have a Wet Basement for Long

1/3/2022 (Permalink)

A corner of a basement with a concrete floor and brick walls, water is staining a portion of the walls and floor When failed construction leads to a wet basement, call SERVPRO of Upper Darby to extract the water and moisture.

Repair Water-Damaged Areas in Your Basement Without Delay

Have if you noticed if your basement is wet? If so, you need to take action immediately whether or not you know where the source is coming from. Wet basements are a situation require immediate to prevent further serious and ongoing damage.

Usually, wet basements are a sign of foundation failure which is quite serious. Failure in your foundation to keep water and moisture out of the basement occurs over time, rarely does it happen all at once which can make it hard to catch. However, our SERVPRO of Upper Darby's team of restoration specialists with great experience and tools can detect these weak places before further degradation occurs.

Exactly what the scope of service will depend on just what procedures and products are needed to remedy the issue. It’s possible something as simple as trenching along the exterior perimeter to control French drains and tiles or applying a waterproofing formulation is what is needed. We also have hydrostatic concrete in our arsenal of excellent SERVPRO products.  Vapor barriers form an integral factor in the prevention of water seepage.

Unfortunately, a wet basement can also allow for mold growth to develop. With naturally occurring mold spores in the air, the combination of moisture and warm air are the only elements required for spores to seat themselves on surfaces and establish colonies. Removing dampness in the environment through SERVPRO of Upper Darby's dehumidification and drying processes can eliminate the factors that foster fungal growth.

Rest assured that from the moment our restoration specialists step foot in your home, you’ll be taken care of. They will identify the source of moisture, determine the full scope of damage, and develop the best restoration plan for your needs.

Remember that while a wet basement doesn’t seem like a huge problem at a glance, it could become a devastating issue. Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby today at (610) 352-0700.

Water splashing behind the SERVPRO Logo For over 20 years, SERVPRO of Upper Darby has specialized in water damage repair and restoration.

Water is necessary for life but there are situations where water can cause distress—namely when it causes damage. There are several different causes of water damage, but some are more prevalent than others.

Why Is There Water Damage?

The Travelers Insurance Companies Inc. noted the top five causes of home claims from 2009 to 2015 were:

  • Exterior wind damage
  • Non-weather-related water damage
  • Hail
  • Weather-related water damage
  • Theft

The top five cause for water damage are plumbing issues, appliance leaks, water pipe failures, old water heaters and weather. There are non-weather-related and weather-related water damage situations.

Weather-related damage naturally results from weather such as rain and snow.

Non-weather-related water damage is caused by problems with plumbing and appliances. The top five cause for water damage are plumbing issues, appliance leaks, water pipe failures, old water heaters and weather.

Ways to Protect Your Home

  • Aging hot water heat systems

These preventive tips are just some of the actions you can take to help fight water damage in your home.

Sudsy water pouring out of a front loading washing machine onto white tile floor If you have water damage caused by your washing machine, call SERVPRO of Upper Darby at (610) 352-0700.

Washing Machines Are One of the Most Common Sources of Water Damage in the Home

Understanding your machine’s functions, possible risks and preventative maintenance required, is key to avoiding a costly water damage. The national average claim for water damage caused by a washing machine is over $5,000.

Common Causes of Washing Machine Water Damage

Supply Hose

Make sure the hoses are connected tightly at both sides of the intake water line and inspect the hoses for worn out gaskets, cracks, holes, or pinches. It’s recommended to replace hoses every 5 years.

Water damage caused by intake water lines contain very few biological contaminants and is a category 1 water damage

Drainage

Inspect the drain hose for clogs and verify the hose is properly secured to the back of the machine and to the utility sink or standpipe.

Standpipes drain directly into the sewer. A sewage back can cause a category 3 water damage.

Overloading

Review the owner’s manual for load limits to avoid overloading.

Internal leaks are considered a category 2 water damage, due to the exposure of water that contacts detergent and machine parts.

Does Homeowner’s Insurance Cover Water Damage Caused by a Washing Machine?

Homeowner’s insurance will typically cover the cost to repair your home if your washing machine causes water damage. However, the costs to repair or replace the washing machine is not covered.

8 Frequently Asked Questions About Water Damage

12/4/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO vans behind wet window SERVPRO of Upper Darby Professionals to restore a property back to preloss condition quickly, reliably, and more effectively.

How fast can the SERVPRO of Upper Darby crew get to my home?

Our average time is within 2 hours after receiving the phone call. We can arrive on site to do emergency services and start the mitigation process right away. We just need a signed Service Authorization Form.

How much does water damage restoration cost?

SERVPRO of Upper Darby provides an initial consultation/estimate. We base our quote on this consultation. This professional estimate is determined by the size of the affected area, equipment required, building materials that may need to be removed, and how much containment we may need to set up.

Can you communicate directly with my insurance company?

SERVPRO of Upper Darby is happy to help you; we’ll simply need your claim number and the name of your insurance company. We can then directly deal with your insurer, releasing you from undue worry. You are responsible for the deductible and a deposit if no coverage is available.

What is the drying process for water damage?

The drying process begins with the crew and homeowner first establishing the source of the water or leak and stopping it. The crew also checks for any electrical safety concerns. Our technicians can extract any standing water from the affected area and use moisture-detection and measuring equipment as well as psychrometrics to determine the moisture in the walls and the air. Then, we establish a drying plan to determine the best means of restoration. We deploy a variety of drying systems and equipment, including air movers and commercial grade dehumidifiers, to thoroughly dry the materials and environment. The entire drying process typically takes 3-5 days to complete.

May I stay in my home during the drying process?

The answer is “yes” if your home is safe. Much depends on the severity of the damage. If your residence is deemed unsafe, we can ask your insurance company to provide you with a temporary relocation. You may also wish to stay away from your home—at least during sleeping hours—if you feel the drying equipment is too noisy, as it must run continuously for several days during the dry-down period.

Does all water damage cause mold?

Every water damage event presents an opportunity for mold or other microbial growth. The type of water (clean, gray, or black), severity, ambient temperature, and duration that moisture has been present all directly impact the amount and types of microbial growth species.

How soon can mold growth show up after water damage?

It varies depending upon the conditions, but in most cases, mold growth can be present within 72 hours of a water damage event. Quick response time is key to preventing the spread of mold and secondary water damage.

What product sanitizes the affected areas after a water loss?

We use SERVPRO's proprietary decontamination products on affected areas to reduce the likelihood of mold growth. The primary decontaminant product is SERVPRO Oxide, an EPA-registered, chlorine dioxide-based disinfectant and stabilizer. This product requires no personal protective equipment during application, is safe for use on all surfaces, and is safe for humans and pets.

Restoration Process for Water Damaged Carpets

Wet beige carpet Have Water Damaged Carpet? Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby at (610)352-0700

Flooding and water damage can cause immense damage to carpeting, including color bleed, warping, mold growth, fraying of materials, corrosion, and other harmful processes. Resolving water damage in carpets is no easy task, and it’s one of the most involved processes for SERVPRO of Upper Darby’s technicians. To effectively clean up and remove signs of water damage, we may need to bring out a full arsenal of machines and treatment plans. Here are some ways we mitigate and repair the effects of water in carpets.

Water Extraction & Drying

The first and arguably most important part of our work to remove the effects of water damage from carpeting. While water remains in the carpet, it can continue to cause damage and wreak havoc on the home. We use heavy water extraction pumps and directed air movers to eliminate all traces of moisture in the area before moving on to other restoration tasks.

Restoration

Our primary course of action, however, is not replacement but restoration. We make every effort to save your carpet as we can, and in most cases, we can apply treatments and processes to prevent replacement. Our policy of "restoration before replacement" saves our customers, on average, hundreds or thousands of dollars over the course of our work on their properties.

Replacement

Sometimes, the carpet may be so thoroughly damaged that restoration is not a viable option. In this case, we can consult both you and the insurance adjuster to find and install suitable replacement carpeting. While some scenarios may necessitate removal of an entire room's carpet, we more commonly replace only a section of the carpet, seamlessly blending new and restored materials. Note that this may require some extra work such as fresh tack strips.

SERVPRO vans behind wet window Have Water or Flood Damage? Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby – (610) 352-0700

How much does water damage restoration cost?

SERVPRO of Upper Darby provides an initial consultation/estimate. We base our quote on this consultation. This professional estimate is determined by the size of the affected area, equipment required, building materials that may need to be removed, and how much containment we may need to set up.

May I stay in my home during water damage services?

The answer is “yes” if your home is safe. Much depends on the severity of the damage. If your residence is deemed unsafe, we can ask your insurance company to provide you with a temporary relocation. You may also wish to stay away from your home—at least during sleeping hours—if you feel the drying equipment is too noisy, as it must run continuously for several days during the dry-down period.

How soon can mold growth show up after water damage?

It varies depending upon the conditions, but in most cases, mold growth can be present within 72 hours of a water damage event. Quick response time is key to preventing the spread of mold and secondary water damage.

Does all water damage cause mold?

Every water damage event presents an opportunity for mold or other microbial growth. The type of water (clean, gray, or black), severity, ambient temperature, and duration that moisture has been present all directly impact the amount and types of microbial growth species.

SERVPRO of Upper Darby is happy to help you; we’ll simply need your claim number and the name of your insurance company. We can then directly deal with your insurer, releasing you from undue worry. You are responsible for the deductible and a deposit if no coverage is available.

Restoration Process for Water Damaged Carpets

10/21/2019 (Permalink)

Water Damaged Carpets

How Water Damage Affects Your Floors

10/10/2019 (Permalink)

Image of a tiled bathroom with standing water on the floor SERVPRO of Upper Darby to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Why Choose SERVPRO of Upper Darby?

Our highly trained technicians are ready to respond immediately to any flood or water damage you experience. We have the expertise to restore your home or business quickly and properly. We use advanced inspection and extraction equipment to find the water and remove it as quickly as possible. Our technicians will monitor and document the drying process to ensure your property is back to normal.

How to Minimize the Likelihood of Water Damage Affecting Your Home

10/8/2019 (Permalink)

Image of a kitchen sink overflowing and water dripping down green cabinet onto the floor When your home or commercial property has water damage from flooding or leaks, we have the expertise and equipment to properly restore your property.

Any type of leak can cause property damage and create safety and health concerns. It's easy to think that water damage or storm damage won't happen to you, but statistics say otherwise. Water damage is among the most common causes of property insurance claims. One in every 55 homes will have a water-related property damage claim this year. While you cannot stop a storm, you can follow these steps to prevent water damage.

Kitchens and Bathrooms

Kitchens and bathrooms are susceptible to water damage due to the amount of plumbing in these areas.

  • Fix leaking or dripping pipes promptly.
  • Be aware of elevated humidity levels that could indicate an underlying plumbing problem.
  • Maintain caulk around showers and bathtubs.

Appliances

  • Inspect waterlines for appliances at least once per year. If hoses are brittle, cracked or crimped, replace them before they fail.
  • Turn off the water supply for all appliances before traveling out of town.
  • Inspect hoses for washing machines, refrigerators, and ice makers.

Protecting Pipes

  • Insulate pipes that travel along exterior walls or through unheated crawlspaces.
  • Open cupboard doors, and let faucets drip.
  • Before winter, drain all watering hoses, and turn off valves for exterior faucets.
  • If a pipe does freeze, don't thaw it too quickly – the pipes could burst.
  • Never set the thermostat below 55 degrees.

What to Do Until Help Arrives

  • Turn off the water supply immediately.
  • Remove as much water as possible using a mop, towel or shop vac.
  • Remove excess moisture with fans, dehumidifiers, or air conditioners.
  • Use wood blocks or tinfoil to elevate furniture from wet surfaces.
  • Never use ceiling lights, TVs, or appliances in waterlogged areas.
  • Stay out of areas where ceilings are sagging.

How Water Cleanup Works In Your Home

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

As a trusted leader in the restoration industry, SERVPRO of Upper Darby provides 24-hour emergency service and is dedicated to being faster to any siz

Water damage is a distressing situation, and your response time is crucial. When water leaks, it can carry bacteria, sewage, and grime into your home, staining furniture, carpets, walls, and floors. The quicker we respond to the situation, the less likely that permanent damage will occur. SERVPRO of Upper Darby has a crew of highly trained technicians who can be onsite within four hours.

Inspection and Water Damage Assessment

When a qualified water technician arrives on site, he or she can assess any immediate danger and mitigate loss. This includes finding the water source, cordoning off areas of danger, and removing furniture and possessions.

In our 40 years of experience, our experts have found that communication is key to the job. A SERVPRO of Upper Darby professional can provide you with a detailed, step-by-step explanation of the process as well as the likely outcome of each step. If you know of any preexisting conditions or materials that could be a problem, like asbestos, you need to let our team know.

Water Removal and Drying / Dehumidification

Once we are both satisfied, we begin by extracting water. SERVPRO of Upper Darby can use powerful submersible gas pumps to extract pooling water. In less extreme cases, we can use industrial wet/dry vacuums to bring moisture out of carpeted floors. How long the initial drying process takes depends on the size of the affected area and the extent of damage, which is measured using moisture meters.

Cleaning, Sanitizing and Restoration

With the initial phase complete, we can begin the restoration process.

A full explanation can be given during the final walk around to show you where work has been done and areas where replacements are necessary. We then clear away our tools, remove any barriers placed in affected areas, and leave you with a clean, water-free home.

What To Do When Your Home Has A Wet Basement

10/30/2018 (Permalink)

We are water damage specialists who get started promptly to get your property dry and back to pre-water-damage condition.

Your home might not be decades old, but it may have structural concerns that could cause future problems. Any home is only as good as the contractors who built it, and this goes down to each block that was laid to construct your basement walls and foundation. Small imperfections—or the lack of having full mortar joints—can cause water to eventually penetrate from the exterior into your basement.

The trouble is, you may not even notice this happening when it first begins. The symptoms of failing waterproofing efforts and structural concerns of your foundation might only present themselves as some excess moisture in the air. This might not seem like a huge deal at first, but the problem can worsen over time, with several impending threats to you and your home.

Wetness and warmer temperatures can combine with mold spores that naturally occur in the air to form fungal growths throughout your basement level. With the health effects that mold can cause to you and your family, this possible threat requires professional mold remediation services from certified and trusted professionals, such as our technicians at SERVPRO of Upper Darby

In addition, cutting off the unwelcome water source should be a priority. Contact a professional basement waterproofing company that is equipped to handle the task. They may patch holes and cracks in your foundation with durable hydraulic cement or completely encapsulate crawl spaces that were allowing excess moisture and water to reach the walls of your foundation. They can also advise you of any negative grading or improper landscaping that’s causing the infiltration of water and moisture. A sump pump or dehumidifier may also help rectify current and potential water damaging conditions.

If your basement is unexplainably wet, call our SERVPRO of Upper Darby team of restoration specialists. We can help dry up your basement, prevent further damage, and ensure the safety of your family.

When Pipes Cause Water Damage In Delaware County

10/17/2018 (Permalink)

Have Water or Flood Damage? Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby Today – (610) 352-0700

If you’ve ever experienced water damage from a burst pipe in your home, you probably understand how stressful it can be, not to mention how expensive. Damaged items must be replaced, insurance claims must be submitted, and your life is on hold until everything is resolved. In addition, mold and mildew may compound the problem if not treated immediately. Fortunately, the professional water damage experts at SERVPRO of Upper Darby are available 24/7 to help you.

Leaky Pipes

Pay close attention to leaky pipes and other plumbing problems that may create a constant source of moisture in your home. If you find a leaky pipe, get it repaired immediately. But don’t try to evaluate or diagnose the moisture problem yourself. Leave that to the professionals.

Preventing Structural Damage

When it comes to water damage, never procrastinate. It can easily lead to structural damage, and structural damage will only get worse if ignored. That’s why you should have a qualified contractor accurately assess the situation.

Mold Hazards

Mold is often considered the worst type of property damage. The presence of mildew or mold damage can result in serious health problems for anyone residing in the home. The cellulose used to manufacture drywall is a favorite location for mold spores to proliferate. You should look for mold and mildew on a regular basis in areas that are typically damp, such as laundry rooms and basements. If you detect a water moisture problem, a mold inspection should be completed immediately.

Additional Considerations

Attempting to deal with water damage from a burst pipe without professional assistance is unwise. Few homeowners have the skills to repair such damage on their own. If you attempt to do so, you may inadvertently make the problem worse, leading to expensive repairs. It is best to hire a water restoration company experienced in a broad range of moisture problems, as they can provide services such as mold remediationcarpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning, and water removal. An experienced company will provide a complete evaluation of the water damage, including a monetary estimate for the necessary repairs. Before hiring a water damage restoration company, ask if the company’s technicians are certified in water damage restoration. Your home is your major investment; addressing water and moisture problems in a timely manner should be your top priority.

Maintaining Your Water Heater Could Prevent A Water Damage

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

If a leaking water heater causes water damage in your home, Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby at (610) 352-0700

Maintaining your home’s water heater can extend its life and help it work efficiently. One way to ensure it runs at peak performance is to flush it out. This process cleans away sediment that collects inside the water tank and can be performed in a few simple steps.

Cut the Power

It is vital to your safety that you turn off the power to your water tank before performing the flush. Turn off the circuits to the room where you have your heater, or snuff out the pilot light. While the tank cools, you can collect a few tools you will need to complete the flush, including rubber gloves, a garden hose, and a screwdriver.

Connect the Hose

Locate the drain valve on your water heater and connect one end of the hose there. Remember to wear the gloves. Set the other end of the hose into a large bucket or drainage ditch outside to collect the excess water and sediment. Once the hose is secure, turn the valve back on and allow the water to drain.

Perform the Flush Several Times

Once the water drains for a minute, go to the kitchen and run the hot water faucet for a few moments to help the tank empty. Then you can close the water supply valve again until the draining stops. You can perform the water heater flush several times. Remember to close valves on the heater before you turn the water supply back on, then run the faucet until it stops spitting air and runs smoothly before you restore the main power to the heater.

Maintaining your home’s water heater can boost its efficiency. Flushing your unit is one of the best ways to keep it operating for years of worry-free performance.

If something should go wrong and you still hear crackling or popping when you run your heater, call a water cleanup and restoration company to flush your tank professionally. If the sediment buildup is considerable, you may not be able to clear it on your own.

How to Deal with a Toilet Overflow

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Sewage Backup or Toilet Overflow? Call Us Today – (610) 352-0700

At one time or another, you’ve probably had to deal with a toilet overflow. Sometimes it’s due to a simple clog that’s easy to fix. Other times it can be much more overwhelming. If sewer damage is involved, the impact can be devastating.

What Happens

When there is sewer damage, whether it’s a broken pipe or a clog, the wastewater has to go somewhere. If it can’t be drained, it can back up into your residence. This is why you usually end up with a flooded toilet when your sewer has been compromised.

Extra Measures

When the overflow begins, here’s how you can help prevent further backflow and the buildup of contaminated water:

  • Don’t flush toilets
  • Keep running water off
  • Turn off water to building

What To Do

The wastewater that overflows into your home due to sewer damage is full of dangerous contaminants and toxins. Unless you have the proper gear and equipment, you don’t want to be inside the flood or clean it up on your own. Call your sewage company immediately, and then call SERVPRO of Upper Darby.

Prevent Water Damage to Your Home While Away for the Holidays

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

If you experience a property loss this holiday season, call SERVPRO of Upper Darby for your fire and water restoration needs

How to Prevent Water Damage When You’re out of Town:

The holidays make for one of the busiest travel seasons in the United States. Whether you are traveling to be with family for the holidays or just plain trying to escape the cold by going south, if you are traveling, you will need to prepare your home for your absence.

Traveling during the holidays doesn’t have to turn you into the Grinch. With a little planning, you can eliminate the chances of water damage when you’re away from home.

Those Most Common Mishaps Are:

  • Busted pipes
  • Toilet overflows
  • Water heater leaks
  • Dishwasher leaks
  • Ice maker malfunctions
  • Sink overflows
  • Busted washing machine hoses
  • Shower and tub leaks and overflows

Steps To Help Eliminate Your Risk

Shut Off Main Water Supply Valve:

Closing the valve on the main water supply line cuts off water to your home. This will help to prevent floods or major pipe leaks.  If you are unsure where the main water valve is located, look for your water meter. The valve will not be far.

  • Open up all the taps in your home for at least 5-10 minutes to release water pressure.
  • When returning home, turn the water back on at the valve first to allow any rust or sediment to wash out of the lines before you turn off the taps.

Shut Off Select Water Valves:

If you have someone checking in on your home from time to time, while you are away, you may not want to restrict ALL water supply. If this is the case, just shut off select supply lines to limit the risk of leaks.

Individual shutoff valves can be found on the supply lines leading to most appliances, toilets and faucets. Turn it clockwise to shut off the water flow to that particular appliance, toilet or faucet.

Set The Thermostat:

If no one is going to be home when you’re away, there is absolutely no need to waste the energy heating the home in your absence.

  • Do NOT shut off your heat completely. You should lower your thermostat to around 55°F. This will reduce your energy costs, but it will stay warm enough to help prevent your pipes from freezing.
  • Lowering the humidity settings will help to reduce the risk of condensation issues.

Shut Off SOME Electric:

If any of your televisions, computers, stereos, and other electronics are plugged directly into the wall rather than into a surge protector, pull the plugs in case a power surge happens while you're away. If you do have them all run through surge protects, you can simply flip the switch to power them off.

  • We do not advise cutting off ALL electric. You need the electric to continue to power important things throughout the home (ie: sump pump, security system, refrigerator, etc.)
  • Have a select few lights on a timer. This will create the impression that someone is occupying the home and discourage any criminal intentions.
  • If you have a well, shut the electrical line to the well. This way, it will not continue to pump water while you are gone.
  • Shutting off major electrical components will go a long way in reducing your energy use.

Check Your Sump Pump:

Rainwater can be a nightmare. If your sump pump fails while you're gone and a major storm comes around, you could return to a flooded basement. So make sure the sump pump is working before you leave town.

  • Dump a bucket of water in the sump pump hole. The pump should turn on when the pit fills with water.

General Maintenance:

You should set aside some time to make a lap around the outside of your home to complete any minor maintenance tasks that can go a long way in preventing water damage in your absence.

  • Ie.  Clean your gutters and downspout extensions

Befriend A Neighbor:

It is always a good idea to leave a spare key and your contact information with someone you trust. This way, if something were to happen in your home, someone will be around to discover it early and contact you.

Why Is Fall Gutter Cleaning Important?

10/11/2017 (Permalink)

If you fail to prepare… SERVPRO of Upper Darby, PA will be there!

Cleaning Gutters Is Essential To Property Maintenance In Drexel Hill, PA

Water is your home’s enemy. It will flood, rot, mildew, and destroy your home if you allow it. Your home has defenses against water damage. Your roof is its first, but not only, line of defense. Your gutter system provides a vital secondary line of defense to warding off water damage. Gutters keep your home’s perimeter from becoming waterlogged and potentially leaking into the basement or causing other damage to the structure, as well as surrounding landscaping.

Gutters…And Why They Should Matter To You.

How do gutters work?

Protecting your foundation is your gutter system’s main purpose. Ideally, water should be diverted a minimum of ten feet from the foundation, but that can vary, depending on the grade of the lawn. Over time, without properly working gutters, water would cause cracks to form which can potentially collapse your home’s foundation. Even if the foundation stays intact, mold can still grow which can be a nuisance to remove. Other structural damage may occur as well if your gutters are not properly maintained.

What could happen if I don’t care for my gutters?

  • Gutters are secured to your home on a fascia board. When gutters overflow, fascia boards are the first part of your home to be damaged. When your fascia board is rotten, the entire gutter needs to be removed in order to replace the board, which is a fairly costly mistake.
  • Wood rot from overflowing gutters can destroy windows, doors and even entire walls.
  • Your home’s landscaping can also be a victim of poor gutter maintenance. When gutters are clogged and water overflows, trenches are created in flowerbeds and small bushes and flowers can be killed by the cascading water.
  • Ice dams can cause serious damage to your home. When an ice dam gets large enough, melted water backs up behind it and seeps underneath the shingles. Sooner or later, it will make its way into the insulation and down to the ceilings and exterior walls, under the eaves, ruining sheetrock and paint. If the ice dam breaks free, it can pull shingles and gutters off with it, and it will damage anything it falls on: shrubs, windowsills, cars, pets, and people. If the roof sheathing stays wet, it can form mildew and start to rot.

When should my gutters be cleaned?

Living in an area that has both falling leaves in Autumn, and tree pollen and seedlings in the spring, most homes in Drexel Hill, PA need to clean the debris from the gutters twice a year. If you have no trees taller than your roof, you might be able to get away with only an annual inspection of the gutter system. If you have trees taller than your gutters, anywhere close to your home, you most likely will need your gutters cleaned twice or even three times a year.

Ideal time for cleaning gutters vary from property to property and depends on a few factors.

  • The type of trees on your property greatly effects when leaves shed.

Evergreens: Even though they look like they are covered in   leaves all year, evergreens are not always green. Needles die, turn brown, and fall every year. Most properties with heavy evergreen coverage in Drexel Hill, PA need their gutters cleaned at least twice in the Fall; once in September and again in late November.

Deciduous Trees: They shed their leaves all at once after changing colors every Fall. These trees drop their leaves in a short time frame and most trees in our area are clear of leaves in early December marking the time to clean the gutters.

  • The temperature, sunlight, and soil moisture greatly influence when the leaves fall.

Mild & Warm Fall: Expect the leaves to stay on the trees a couple weeks longer.

Cold & Dry Fall: The leaves will typically shed much earlier.

Cleaning gutters is essential to proper home maintenance. If cleaned too soon, you will find yourself cleaning them multiple times. The easiest way to know when it’s time to clean your gutters this Fall is to look out your window. When the leaves are gone and you can see the sky beyond the trees, it’s time to clean your gutters.   See Other Fall Cleaning Tips

You May Have Clogged Gutters If....

10/9/2017 (Permalink)

If clogged gutters have caused water damage to your home, Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby, PA Today (610) 352-0700.

6 Signs You Have Clogged Gutters In Delaware County, PA

Clogged gutters can wreak havoc on your entire Delaware County, PA home. When your gutters become clogged, water will be unable to properly divert away from your home. Instead, the water will spill over the side of your gutters, leading to a number of different issues like foundation damage, structural issues, mold and mildew and basement flooding. Check your gutters frequently to avoid these problems.

You May Have Clogged Gutters If………

1. You Spot Birds Or Pests By Your Roof

If you are noticing animals or pests hanging around your gutters, this can be a sign your gutters are clogged. Gutters are a convenient place for birds and pests to make a nest.

2. Water Is Spilling Over The Sides

If you notice water spilling over the sides of your gutters, it’s a tell-tale sign you have clogged rain gutters. The obstruction can force water over the sides of your gutter, leading to expensive water related damages.

3. Sagging Gutters

Sagging gutters are a sign that your gutters are clogged. The weight of the debris, leaves, shingle grit and pine needles can cause your gutters to bend in the middle and sag. Unfortunately, your gutters will be ineffective at carrying water away from your home.

4. Staining On Your Siding

Staining on the siding of your home can be a sign of standing water in your gutter system. Rain water that is stagnant could end up causing costly damage to the fascia boards behind the gutters and on the shingles of your roof.

     4.  Plant Growth

A Garden in your gutters is an obvious sign of clogged gutters. Seeds can accumulate in your gutters and along with dirt and debris, a gutter garden can form!

     5.  Can’t Remember The Last Time You Cleaned

If you can’t remember the last time you climbed the ladder to clean your gutters, odds are you’re in need of a serious cleaning.

If clogged gutters have caused water damage to your home, Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby Today (610) 352-0700.

Quick Action Can Prevent Additional Property Loss After A Storm In Upper Darby, PA

8/3/2017 (Permalink)

If the storms in Delaware County, PA caused water damage to your home of business Call SERVPRO of Upper Darby (610) 352-0700

Steps You Can Take to Prevent Secondary Water Damage If The Storms In Delaware County, PA Have Caused Water Damage To Your Home Or Business?

You come home and find your basement drowning in several inches of standing water. What do you do now? Well, if a leaking roof is the culprit, you need to first eliminate the water source by calling a repair service to tarp and/or repair the roof damage. Did your sump pump fail? Then, call a plumber out as soon as possible to repair or replace the sump pump. In any case, the source needs to be addressed before any clean up can begin. And remember, quick response is the key to mitigating, or minimizing, the loss in water damage.

Failure to react swiftly can lead to secondary damage and increase your property loss.

What is Secondary Water Damage?

Secondary damage is additional damage that is not caused as a direct result of the primary damage or incident. The most common form of secondary damage is Mold Growth. After 24 hours mold spores can begin to grow and will multiply rapidly.  Widespread mold growth may require SERVPRO of Upper Day’s Mold Remediation Services to safely treat and remove the mold.

Other common forms or secondary damage are:

  1. Mold Growth –  Mold needs moisture to grow and can grow as fast as 24 hours. If the affected areas are not dried properly and quickly, mold will begin to grow and spread rapidly.
  2. Electrical Damage – Water entering any of the electrical sockets can cause serious damage and electrical shocking can occur. Stay clear of the area and hire a professional to remediate. See Tips to preventing Electrical Fires.
  3. Corrosion– If metal materials (ie, studs, pipes) are exposed to water, corrosion or rust will begin. This will affect the structure of the material and if not addressed, over time the metal material can disintegrate and cause even more extreme damages.
  4. Wood Rot – Similar to corrosion, except it applies to organic material such as the wooden structures of your property. If not treated, this can lead to major structural issues.
  5. Material Damage –Materials that have been affected by water and have lost their form, with no way to return them to their normal state.

Repairing and restoring your property after a storm can be a lengthy and expensive process, It is best accomplished by a professional company to avoid subsequent damage and keep cost to a minimum wherever possible. SERVPRO of Upper Darby, PA helps you through every step.

Here are a few steps you can take Until Help Arrives, that may help you minimize the amount of damage your property will suffer after water damage.
