With a major storm on the horizon, you must make an important safety decision: evacuate or shelter in place? Evacuating may seem not worth the stress and hassle but more often than it is the safer option. Staying in your home during a flood can leave you trapped with several serious risks to the safety of the structure and yourself. Also keep in mind when evacuating if the roads are safe to travel as it is common for water to block roadways. Below are some of the risk factors that occur in your home due to flooding.

Rising Water

While some floods come and go quickly through your home, others may leave behind standing water. Getting into direct contact with standing water isn’t safe is it contaminated and could expose you to bacteria, sewage, and chemicals. Advisories: Be Aware

Winter Weather Advisories are issued when a winter storm event (sleet, ice, snow, freezing rain, snow and blowing snow, or a combination of events) is expected to meet or exceed local winter weather advisory criteria in the next 12 to 36 hours but stay below warning criteria.

Criteria for Snow: 4 inches or more in 12 hours or less covering at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population. Use "mid-point" of snowfall range to trigger advisory (i.e. 2 to 5 inches of snow = advisory).

Criteria for Ice: Any ice accumulation less than 1/2 inch over at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population. Winter Weather Advisory can also be issued for black ice. This is optional.  Be prepared for winter driving conditions and possible travel difficulties.  Use caution when driving. 

Freezing Rain Advisories are issued when light ice accumulation (freezing rain and/or freezing drizzle) is expected in the next 12 to 36 hours, (but will remain below 1/2 inch) for at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population and not reach warning criteria. 

Expect a glaze on roads resulting in hazardous travel.  Slow down and use caution while driving because even trace amounts of ice on the roads can be dangerous. 

Wind Chill Advisories are issued when low wind chill temperatures are expected to meet or exceed local wind chill advisory criteria in the next 12 to 36 hours, but will not reach local warning criteria. Wind chill temperatures may reach or exceed -15°F.  Extremely cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chill readings.

Watches: Be Prepared

Blizzard Watches are issued when conditions are favorable for a blizzard event in the next 24 to 72 hours. There is a potential for falling and/or blowing snow with strong winds or frequent gusts greater than or equal to 35 mph and extremely poor visibilities to less than a ¼ mile for 3 or more hours. 

This can lead to whiteout conditions and make travel very dangerous. 

Winter Storm Watches are issued when conditions are favorable for a significant winter storm event (heavy sleet, heavy snow, ice storm, heavy snow and blowing snow or a combination of events.)  There is a potential to meet or exceed local winter storm warning criteria in the next 24 to 72 hours.

Criteria for Snow: 7 inches or more in 12 hours or less; or 9 inches or more in 24 hours covering at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population. Use "mid-point" of snowfall range to trigger a watch (i.e. 5 to 8 inches of snow = watch).

Criteria for Ice: 1/2 inch or more over at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population.

Wind Chill Watches are issued when Conditions are favorable for wind chill temperatures to meet or exceed local wind chill warning criteria in the next 24 to 72 hours. There is the potential for a combination of extremely cold air and strong winds to create dangerously low wind chill values.

Warnings: Take Action!

Blizzard Warnings are issued when a blizzard event is imminent or expected in the next 12 to 36 hours and means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring.  There is potential for frequent gusts greater than or equal to 35 mph accompanied by falling and/or blowing snow with strong winds, frequently reducing visibility to less than ¼ mile for three hours or more.  May lead to whiteout conditions making travel extremely difficult. 

Do not travel!  If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you.  If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle and wait for help to arrive. 

Winter Storm Warnings are issued for a winter storm event (heavy sleet, heavy snow, ice storm, heavy snow and blowing snow or a combination of events) and is expected to meet or exceed local winter storm warning criteria in the next 12 to 36 hours.

Criteria for Snow: 7 inches or more in 12 hours or less; or 9 inches or more in 24 hours covering at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population. Use "mid-point" of snowfall range to trigger warning (i.e. 5 to 8 inches of snow = warning).

Criteria for Ice: 1/2 inch or more over at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population. Travel will become difficult or impossible in some situations.  Delay your travel plans until conditions improve.

Ice Storm Warnings are usually issued when there is an ice storm event is expected to meet or exceed local ice storm warning criteria in the next 12 to 36 hours.

Criteria for Ice: 1/2 inch or more over at least 50 percent of the zone or encompassing most of the population.

This amount of ice accumulation will make travel dangerous or impossible and likely lead to snapped power lines and falling tree branches.  Travel is strongly discouraged. 

Wind Chill Warnings are issued when wind chill temperatures are expected to meet or exceed local wind chill warning criteria in the next 12 to 36 hours and for a combination of very cold air and strong winds that will create dangerously low wind chill values. Wind chill temperatures may reach or exceed -25°F. This level of wind chill will result in frostbite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken.

If you have a basement, your sump pump is often your last line of defense against flooding.  It works by safely diverting water away from your house and is especially important during times of heavy rain when it puts your home at risk of water damage.  If your sump pump fails, you could find your basement under water.  When this happens, it is important to act fast! Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.

Pipes that freeze most frequently are:

• Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.
• Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
• Pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines.

How to Protect Pipes From Freezing

Before the onset of cold weather, protect your pipes from freezing by following these recommendations:

• Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.
• Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
• Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
• Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from freezing.
• Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
• Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines unless directed. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes

• If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
• When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
• Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

• Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.

• Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.

How to Thaw Frozen Pipes

• If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.

• Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.

• Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.

• Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.

• Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.

How to Winterize Your Home on a Budget

When a winter storm hits your home, you need the company with storm damage experience and expertise.

Winterization is the process of preparing a home for the harsh conditions of winter. It is usually performed in the fall before snow and excessive cold have arrived. Stay warm, save money and prevent damage to your home from the cold and snow with these simple winterization tips.

Clean Your Gutters

Clear leaves, tree branches and debris from your gutters. Failure to do so can result in leaks and the overflow of water whenever rain falls or snow melts. Making sure that water can flow freely through your gutters now will help prevent icicles and ice dams from forming later. 

The benefits of cleaning your gutters before winter will help you avoid the unfortunate event of your basement being flooded with water, rotted fascia boards, cracked walkways or patios and many other potential areas of damage.

Flush the Water Heater

Particles and sediment can collect over time in the bottom of your water heater, hindering the unit's efficiency. Flush the water through the drain valve to clear out the material and keep your heater functioning at its best.

When water freezes, it expands. So, if the temperature of your pipes drops below 32 degrees, even for a short period, you run the risk of a pipe fracture or worse. Take precautions now to avoid a major water damage. Pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawlspaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Also, pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.

Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a “pipe sleeve” or installing UL-listed “heat tape,” “heat cable,” or similar materials on exposed water pipes.

Cost: Pipe Sleeve $5 to $12 per sleeve; Insulation Tape $10 per pack;  Heat Cable $20 to $150 depending on length

Window Insulation Film

Window insulation film is a plastic film which can be applied to glass windows to reduce heat transfer. Window insulation film can keep up to 70% of heat from leaking out of the windows.

Weatherstripping

Place weatherstripping along doorjambs, and in the gaps between windows and sashes, to keep the chilly breezes out and the heat in. Weatherstripping can save you up to 20 percent on your heating bill. Choose a type of weatherstripping that will withstand the friction, weather, temperature changes, and wear and tear associated with its location. 

Cost:$5 to $10 per roll.

Draft Guards

In a drafty room, heat escapes under the door. A Draft Guard is a flexible, rubber strip that seals the gap at the bottom of the door to keep out drafts and prevent heat loss.

Cost:$10 to $20 or free if you place a rolled towel at the bottom of the door.  

Fiberglass Insulation

Fiberglass insulation slows the spread of heat, cold, and sound in structures. The material does this by trapping pockets of air, keeping rooms warm in the winter. For maximum heat retention, pack fiberglass insulation around basement doors, windows in unused rooms, and window AC units. Make sure your attic floor is insulated to stop heat from escape through the attic as it rises! 

 Cost: around $25 per roll.

Caulking

Any remaining gaps in siding, windows, or doors can be filled with caulk. For extra drafty windows and doors, caulk the inside too, pulling off moldings to fill all gaps in the insulation. 

Cost: $10 for a caulk gun and less than $5 for a tube of caulk.

Chimney Balloon

A chimney balloon is a balloon made of special heat reactive, durable material. Its purpose is to block the opening of a chimney that is not in use. If you do not regularly use your fireplace, a chimney balloon is the ideal solution to stop chimney drafts and save energy.

Cost:$25 to $60 depending on the size of the balloon.

How to Prevent Your Pipes from Freezing When You Have No Heat

• Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

• Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.

• When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.

• Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.

• Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.

• Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device. Apply heat until full water pressure is restored.

• Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.

• If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.

A cloud-to-ground lightning bolt's main objective is to find the path of least resistance from the cloud to deep into the ground. Your house is filled with many potential routes for lightning to follow. The biggest danger lightning poses to a house is fire. Wood and other flammable building materials can easily be ignited anywhere an exposed lightning channel comes in contact with (or passes through) them. 8 Easy DIY Projects to Help Dispel Those Drafts

As outside temperatures plummet, leaky windows can make the inside of your home feel downright chilly. Obviously, the permanent solution to drafts is to replace old and leaky windows with new, energy-efficient versions. Not everyone, however, can afford the substantial cost of replacement windows, and for those who are renting a home, expensive projects simply don't make sense. But there are some quick and easy fixes for drafty windows that can make a big difference in both your comfort level and your heating bills. Indeed, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, reducing drafts in a home can result in energy savings that range between 5 and 30 percent per year, while keeping your family snug and cozy. Here are a few easy projects to help dispel those drafts.

1. Locate the Source

Find the source of drafts in your home using a matchstick or candle. Slowly move the flame around the window frame. If the flame bends or flickers at any point, use a small sticky note to mark the spot so you can come back and seal it.

2. Draft Snake

Make or purchase a draft snake to prevent warm air from escaping—or cold air from entering—around the sills of drafty windows and under doors. Draft snakes can be made of virtually any fabric, including old towels or socks.

3. Storm Stoppers

Install interior storm windows, which fit into the inside of an existing window frame. As an alternative to storm windows, plexiglass or clear acrylic panels can be secured with screws in the corners of the window frame.

6. Bubble Wrap

If you don’t need to open a window all winter, use bubble wrap to seal it. You can buy bubble wrap by the roll and cut it to fit your drafty windows. Use double-sided tape to keep the plastic in place.

Seasonally swap out your lightweight curtains for insulating window treatments. Opt for heavy draperies or layered curtains; honeycomb shades, which trap air between layers of fabric to provide insulation; or roman shades.

What’s Happening Outdoors This Time of Year

1.   IT SNOWS WHERE YOU LEAST EXPECT IT.

Snow has been known to touch down anywhere from the Sahara Desert to Hawaii – even the driest place on Earth isn’t immune.  In 2011, the Atacama Desert in Chile received nearly 32 inches of snow, thanks to a rare cold front from Antarctica.

2.   SNOWFLAKES COME IN ALL SIZES.

The average snowflake ranges from a size slightly smaller than a penny to the width of a human hair, but according to some unverified sources, they can grow much larger.  Witnesses of a snowstorm in Fort Keogh, Montana, in 1887, claimed to see saucepan-sized crystals fall from the sky.  If true, that would make them the largest snowflakes ever spotted, at around 15 inches wide!

3.   A LITTLE WATER CAN MAKE A LOT OF SNOW.

The air doesn’t need to be super moist to produce impressive amounts of snow.  Unlike plain rainfall, a bank of fluffy snow contains lots of air that adds to its bulk.  That’s why what would have been an inch of rain in the summer, equals about 10 inches of snow in the colder months.

4.   YOU CAN HEAR THUNDERSNOW WHEN THE CONDITIONS ARE RIGHT.

If you’ve ever heard the unmistakable rumble of thunder in the middle of a snowstorm, that’s not your ears playing tricks on you.  It’s likely thundersnow, a rare winter weather phenomenon that’s most common near lakes.  When relatively warm columns of air rise from the ground and form turbulent storm clouds in the sky during the winter, there is potential for thundersnow.  A few more factors are still necessary for it to occur – namely air that is warmer than the cloud cover above it, and wind that pushes the warm air upwards.

5.   SNOW FALLS AT 1 TO 6 FEET PER SECOND.

This is at least true in the case of snowflakes with broad structures, which tend to act as parachutes.  Snow that falls in the form of pellet-like graupel travels to Earth at a much faster rate.

6.    IT DOESN’T TAKE LONG FOR THE TEMPERATURE TO DROP.

Rapid City, South Dakota weather records from January 10, 1911, show just how fast temperatures can plummet.  The day started out at a pleasant 55°F.  Then, over the course of 15 minutes, a wicked cold front brought the temperature down to 8°F.  This day still holds the record for the quickest cold snap in history!

7.   THE EARTH IS CLOSEST TO THE SUN DURING THE WINTER.

Every January (the start of the winter season in the northern hemisphere), the Earth reaches the point in its orbit that it is nearest to the Sun.  Despite some common misconceptions, the seasonal drop in temperature has nothing to do with the distance of our planet from the Sun.  It instead has everything to do with which direction the Earth’s axis is tilting, which is why the two hemispheres experience winter at different times of the year.

8.   MORE THAN 22 MILLION TONS OF SALT ARE USED ON U.S. ROADS EACH WINTER.

This comes out to total approximately 137 pounds of salt per person!

9.   THE SNOWIEST CITY ON EARTH IS IN JAPAN.

Aomori City, in northern Japan, receives more snowfall than any major city on the planet.  Each year, citizens are pummeled with 312 inches (or about 26 feet) of snow on average!

10.   SOMETIMES SNOWBALLS FORM THEMSELVES.

Something strange happened in northwest Siberia – mysterious, giant snowballs began washing up on a beach along the Gulf of Ob. It turns out that these ice orbs were formed naturally by the rolling motions of wind and water. With some spheres reaching nearly 3 feet in width, you wouldn’t want to use this frozen ammunition in a snowball fight!

11.   WIND CHILL IS CALCULATED USING A PRECISE FORMULA.

When the weatherman reports a “real feel” temperature of -10 degrees outside, it may sound like he’s coming up with that number on the spot; however, wind chill is actually calculated using a complicated equation devised by meteorologists.  For math enthusiasts who would like to test this theory at home, the formula reads:  Wind Chill = 35.74 + 0.6215T – 35.75(V^0.16) + 0.4275T (V^0.16).

12.   CITIES ARE FORCED TO DISPOSE OF SNOW IN CREATIVE WAYS.

When snow piles up too high for a city to manage, it’s usually hauled away to parking lots, or other wide open spaces, where it can sit until the weather warms up.  During particularly snowy months, cities are sometimes forced to dump snow into the ocean, only to be met with criticism from environmental activists.  Some cities employ snow melting machines that use hot water to melt 30 to 50 tons of snow per hour.  This method is quick, but costly — a single snow melting machine can cost $200,000, and burn 60 gallons of fuel in one single hour of use.
